When the Buddha taught for the first time after becoming enlightened, he proclaimed four things he knew to be true: the truth of suffering, its causes, its cessation, and the path that leads to true peace. These came to be known as the Four Noble Truths, which appear deceptively simple but require a lifetime of contemplation and meditation in order to experience their profundity.
The Four Noble Truths are the foundation of Buddhism. Understanding them is essential to understanding all Buddhist teachings and deepening your own meditation.
"Without understanding the first Noble Truth, there is actually no way you can understand any teaching of the Dharma … You will understand, but that understanding will never be strong enough to overcome [afflictive emotions], habits, and neuroses … [If you’re having difficulty with] meditation … it’s simply because you’ve never taken time to understand the first Noble Truth."
