Foundations of the Mahayana: Preparation for Shedra
Review of The Bodhisattvacaryavatara and the Uttaratantra Shastra During the Lotus Garden Shedra Program in 2006 and 2007, His Eminence Dzigar Kongtrul Rinpoche taught extensively from Shantideva’s classic Mahayana text, the Bodhisattvacaryavatara, or Way of the Bodhisattva. Also during these programs, HE Jetsün Khandro Rinpoche very generously bestowed teachings from the Mahayana-Uttaratantra Shastra, one of Maitreya’s Five Treasures texts on Buddha Nature. Lotus Garden is pleased to present a weekend review of these teachings led by two senior students of HE Jetsün Khandro Rinpoche, Jud Williams and Judy Wolfer. The Bodhisattvacaryavatara, or Way of the Bodhisattva, is a renowned text from the mahayana tradition which outlines the view and methods by which each one of us may become a bodhisattva, a being dedicated to ending the suffering of all sentient beings. The practices of a bodhisattva begin first by rousing the strong wish to save all sentient beings from suffering, known as Aspiration Bodhichitta. Then the bodhisattva puts that wish into action through the practices of the six paramitas and exchanging self for others. The Mahayana-Uttaratantra Shastra is a seminal mahayana text presenting the Buddha's definitive teachings on Buddha Nature, and the qualities and attributes of one’s own enlightened, intrinsic nature. It is our hope that this weekend might serve as preparation for students new to the Shedra Program and a review for continuing students. The weekend will include reviews of the teachings followed by periods of contemplation, with ample time for discussion. Tuition for this program will be $180. The program is open to all, including new students. For more information, please feel free to contact the Lotus Garden Office at admin@lotusgardens.org or by phone at 1.540.778.2405.
